A New Era in Banking: Cryptocurrency Services Unveiled

Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB), one of Switzerland's leading financial institutions, has announced the launch of a cryptocurrency service tailored for its retail clients and third-party banks. This move marks a significant step in the bank's digital evolution, allowing customers to trade Bitcoin and Ether through its mobile banking app, eBanking, and other platforms.

Strategic Partnerships and Custody Solutions

To facilitate crypto asset brokerage, ZKB has partnered with Crypto Finance, a digital asset company owned by Deutsche Börse. Crypto Finance is well-regulated, holding licenses from both Switzerland's FINMA and Germany's BaFIN. While ZKB has developed its own crypto custody solution, it has also partnered with Fireblocks to enhance its service offerings.

A Pillar of Stability and Innovation

As the largest cantonal bank in Switzerland, owned by the canton of Zurich, ZKB holds a prominent position in the financial sector. Global Finance recently ranked it as the second safest bank in the world for 2023, thanks to its AAA ratings from Fitch, Moody’s, and S&P, alongside its substantial total assets.

Expertise and Regulation

Peter Hubli, Head of Digital Asset Solutions at ZKB, expressed confidence in the bank's new venture. "With Crypto Finance, we have an experienced, regulated, and competent partner at our side with long-lasting industry expertise, mastering the facets of the crypto business," he stated, highlighting the strategic advantage of this collaboration.

Switzerland's Crypto-Friendly Environment

Switzerland is renowned for its supportive stance towards cryptocurrency, with several wealth managers offering crypto services for years. However, retail banking services in this domain are relatively new. Among Switzerland's major banks, PostFinance was the first to introduce cryptocurrency services earlier this year through a partnership with Sygnum Bank.

Pioneering Digital Asset Services

In 2021, BBVA Switzerland made headlines as one of the first banks globally to offer digital asset services without net worth requirements, setting a precedent for others in the industry.

ZKB's entry into the cryptocurrency market reflects a broader trend of traditional banks embracing digital assets, providing customers with more diverse financial options and enhancing the accessibility of cryptocurrencies in the mainstream financial landscape.
