DOE Issues $2.7 Billion RFP to Boost Domestic Nuclear Fuel Supply Chain

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a $2.7 billion Request for Proposals (RFP) to purchase low-enriched uranium (LEU) from domestic sources. This initiative is a significant step towards strengthening the domestic nuclear fuel supply chain.

Strategic Importance

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm emphasized the critical nature of this initiative: "DOE is helping jumpstart uranium enrichment capacity here in the United States, which is critical to strengthening our national security and growing our domestic nuclear industry". The RFP seeks to award at least two contracts with terms of up to 10 years, with proposals due by August 26, 2024.

Assistant to the President and National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi highlighted the broader implications: "Strengthening our domestic nuclear fuel supply chain will be critical as we continue to move from an energy system reliant on foreign suppliers and fossil fuels to one that embraces cleaner sources of power and domestic manufacturing".

The RFP is funded by the Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2024, which allocates funds for conventional and advanced U.S. uranium enrichment capabilities.

Market Impact

The DOE stated that the RFP will "spur the safe and responsible build-out of uranium enrichment capacity in the United States, promote diversity in the market, and provide a reliable supply of commercial nuclear fuel". This move is expected to support the energy security and resilience of American industries.

In conclusion, the DOE's $2.7 billion RFP represents a significant investment in the future of the U.S. nuclear industry, aiming to ensure a stable and secure supply of nuclear fuel while supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources.
